Today, Thursday Island is the administrative centre of all the Australian islands between Cape York and the New Guinea mainland. Almost 70 percent of the population of 3,000 are Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders. See the cannons at Green Hill Fort, where underground tunnels house the Torres Strait Historical Museum, and Gab Titui Cultural Centre, which exhibits historical artefacts and contemporary Indigenous art.
